AEP OHIO 'FILET-O-FRIDGE' DEMONSTRATED AT FREEDOM ELEMENTARY

April 21, 2015

Filet-O-Fridge Event Highlights Refrigerator Recycling Program

GAHANNA, Ohio, April 21, 2015 – AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP),  demonstrated its refrigerator recycling program today at Freedom Elementary School in Lima to talk about the benefits of recycling older, inefficient appliances. The school also received a new ENERGY STAR-certified refrigerator from AEP Ohio to help reduce annual energy costs.

“You can save up to $150 a year because old refrigerators can use up to three times more energy than newer, energy-efficient ones,” said Deanna Gilliland, AEP Ohio representative. “We are glad we can educate the students on our refrigerator recycling program and explain the importance of energy conservation.”

The “filet-o-fridge” demonstration reveals the variety of materials that make up a refrigerator, some of which are harmful to the environment if not safely disposed. More importantly, it showed students the many ways those materials are recycled and repurposed. Recycling one fridge returns 95 percent of the unit, and on average 188 pounds of refrigerator materials such as foam, glass and metal, back to the manufacturing stream.

AEP Ohio customers can schedule a free home pickup by calling 1-877-545-4112, or by visiting AEPOhio.com. Program participants receive a $50 incentive and can save up to $150 in reduced energy costs annually.

Refrigerators and freezers to be recycled must be in working order, clean and have an inside volume of between 10 and 30 cubic feet.  A check for $50 will arrive within four to six weeks, and a maximum of two units per household per year will be accepted.  Units to be recycled are picked up and transported to an appliance recycling facility operated by JACO Environmental. JACO safely removes and recycles materials from the energy-guzzlers.
